I ship Ellie and Major Ramsey SO MUCH, though Felix is a decent and steady friend, if a little mysterious at times. A bit of a romance develops between Ellie and her childhood friend, Felix, though the spark and tension between Ellie and the Major are ever present, too. The banter and depth of the characters are favorite parts of the story. As Londoners begin to deal with the reality of war and the imminent threat of German air raids, Ellie works to be part of a ragtag group of criminals-turned-patriots to help the allied cause with her locksmith skills and femininity. It is a proper balance of wit and an honest portrayal of the seriousness of war on the home front. The Key to Deceit is a female-centric WWII heist adventure told through the eyes of the heroine, Electra McDonnel (Ellie). Exiled to France during the Spanish Civil War, and only able to return to Catalonia in the mid-1960s, she wrote a number of highly praised works, including The Time of the Doves and Death in Spring. Mercè Rodoreda is widely regarded as the most important Catalan writer of the twentieth century. Written over a period of twenty yearsafter Rodoreda was forced into exile following the Spanish Civil War Death in Spring is musical and rhythmic, and truly the work of a writer at the height of her powers. The horrific rituals, however, stand in stark contrast to the novel's stunningly poetic language and lush descriptions. It is through these rituals, and the developing relationships between the boy and the townspeople, that Rodoreda portrays a fully-articulated, though quite disturbing, society. The novel tells the story of the bizarre and destructive customs of a nameless townburying the dead in trees after filling their mouths with cement to prevent their soul from escaping, or sending a man to swim in the river that courses underneath the town to discover if they will be washed away by a floodthrough the eyes of a fourteen-year-old boy who must come to terms with the rhyme and reason of this ritual violence, and with his wild, child-like, and teenage stepmother, who becomes his playmate. Considered by many to be the grand achievement of her later period, Death in Spring is one of Mercè Rodoreda's most complex and beautifully constructed works. Also, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter are annoying. Narrator Alison Larkin was great, but she portrayed the heroine in a somewhat childlike voice, and she needs to learn how to say "laudanum" if she plans to read more historic novels. These two series are similar in many ways, with orphaned or otherwise homeless youth, mangy but loyal animals, "great dame" adoptive aunts, and cast-off servants. I loved Gracie's other series, especially The Perfect Rake and The Perfect Waltz. Still, I'm probably going to read book 4 when it's published - Daisy's story. Emotionally I felt little connection to the lead characters. The murder charge somehow never felt like an honest theat, and I frequently felt one step ahead of the plot lines. THE SPRING BRIDE was pleasant but predictable. The mutt described in the synopsis played a starring role for a while but then he faded into the background. It was good to see old familiar characters again: Aunt Beatrice and the four Chance sisters, Max, Freddie, the butler Frothby and the footman-cum-bodyguard William. Contents include one sex scene, minimal violence, minimal swearing. But it's a pleasant enough post-war romantic mystery, set in London 1817. Third book in an ongoing series, and in my view the weakest of the series, so far. The beautiful blend of mythology, romance, and action ends with a hint at more to come. Her life intersects with Ekon’s after she rescues him from an ancient murderous creature called the Shetani, which has long threatened Lkossa when he allows Koffi to flee, he forfeits his birthright as an elite warrior.
